Nose: A vibrant burst of tropical aromas. Wafting into my nose first are bergamot, guava, grilled pineapple, and some tart, unripe stone fruit. There’s a gentle sweet note, reminiscent of dried prunes. Adding water brings out more sourness, evocative of tannic red wines, maybe Tempranillo.
Palate: The mildly oily mouthfeel is a pleasant surprise amid all the tropical scents. It’s sweet and zesty on the palate, with flavors of lime, grapefruit, cherry compote, vanilla sugar, and baking spices.
Finish: A long finish with black currants, red wine tannins, cloves, and a lingering peppery tang.
Final Thought: You know that feeling you sometimes get with creative fusion food? You find the concept intriguing but aren’t sure if you really like the food. That’s how I felt when I first tried Mirador Eclipse at Balcones’ tasting event. I found the smell very edgy, but I wasn’t sure about the taste. However, the more I tried it, and perhaps with a bit of air exposure in the bottle, I really grew to like this whisky. With all the tropical notes, this is a great dram for summer!
